Batman eventually took Jason in as his ward, and started to train him to become his second Robin, replacing the original, Dick Grayson. Jason encountered Batman when he was fighting the Joker, and saved the former's life by pushing him out of the way of the latter's attack. Willis and Cathy would later be executed by Sal Maroni, leaving Jason an orphan. In his youth, Jason was abused by his father, who considered him worthless and would often release his stress onto his son.
